The Navy frigate USS Jesse L. Brown was commissioned.

The ship was named for Ensign Jesse L. Brown, the first African American naval aviator killed in combat over Korea.

Jessie L. Brown was a United States Navy officer. He was the first African-American to be trained by the Navy as a Naval Aviator and became the first African-American Naval Aviator to see combat.

A recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, Brown was the first African-American naval officer killed in the Korean War.
